The UNRIC

What is the UNRIC?

The United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC) was created in Brussels on January 1, 2004. The Regional Center replaces the nine information centers on the United Nations in Europe (Athens, Bonn, Brussels, Copenhagen, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Paris and Rome), which were shut down on December 31, 2003, by a decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations at its 58th session.

What are the tasks of the UNRIC?

UNRIC provides information and documentation services to the countries in the region of Western Europe. The scope of information extends to all segments of society, as well as to joint projects and events organized with key partners, such as Governments, media, NGOs, educational institutions and local authorities. It also offers materials with general information, United Nations reports, documents, newspapers, posters, fact sheets and brochures. To develop its task, UNRIC has employees in each country. Besides, its library is open to the public, in Brussels, with information available in English, French and Spanish.

What is the relationship of UNA-Spain with the UNRIC?

As a result of the signing, on 11 December 2003, of the Memorandum of Understanding between the World Federation of United Nations Associations and the Department of Public Information of the United Nations, UNA-Spain was recognized by the United Nations as a Focal Point between the Organization and civil society in Spain. And as such it acts from January 1, 2004, being the main nexus or counterpart at a state level with the United Nations Regional Information Centre in Brussels.
