For his great task as representative of the European Union in the peace process in such a conflictive area of the world as the Middle East. His experience in the Arab world and his negotiating nature made him a very suitable person for the mission entrusted to him, defending dialogue over the use of force.

The award was presented in Barcelona.

The amount of the award was donated for the reconstruction of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
